Ok just having a hard time with this one. At this point all I am sure of is that it is NOT a tall date. I am calling it a Medium date for now but can't seem to make a positive ID with the info I have (book at the library not here damn it) So any help is greatly appreaciated.

based on what I'm seeing in the 1 --- I am thinking it may be a small date. Here is where I'm getting the comparison http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/1871_37656510_max.jpg

But I would also like a clearer pic of the date area.

Nevermind.... I fixed it on my photoeditor....

It's a small date 1846. There are three different date punches used, small, medium, and large. The medium date was used on one die pairing and that die has a rather pronounced hole in the earlobe.

:) it's not diagnostic but its a good detail to know. there are two small date varieties with the same hole, but both are very scarce.
