I found two coins this past weekend while hunting a colonial settlement location. Both are pretty banged up, but I'm pretty certain I've done my research and narrowed them down... 1730-something George II Half. I'm pretty certain it reads 1738, but the 8 is almost impossible to read. The best one is this 1697 William III Half Obviously the coin is terribly worn. But after doing hours of research, I narrowed it down to two possible coins; 1697 William III (shown in picture) - or a - William and Mary (two years older, but same features) From what I found, the ribbon in the hair is sort of a finger print for the coin. No two years looks just alike. The 1697 is the only issue that matched. Once that was matched, I checked any other feature I could make out - and they all matched as well. New England Metal Detecting is so damn awesome! I'm heading back to my spot this weekend. It's virgin ground, this much I know. Structures have not even been there since early 1800s, and a lot of money changed hands at the location. I found these two in like 30 minutes, on the first trip out. Good stuff!
