Got 2 coins in the mail today purchsed off eBay. Both were too good to be true... stolen pics from someone else's auction. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up, lol. Thought I hit the jackpot on this first one, but turns out I received a 1876-P polished VG details coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251334247913?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

The second one depicted a 1851 half cent, when in fact I received an 1851 polished, bright shiny VG large cent: http://www.ebay.com/itm/171120690203?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I can only remember one other time this happened to me. About 4 years ago I bought a buy-it-now 1858 flying eagle cent with AU details (in the picture) for $85 and received a Fine details coin. The seller called me a liar and denied wrongdoing. We'll see how these 2 sellers respond...

I have been through this situation a number of times, and recommend you search completed eBay sales for the 2 coins you just bought, and see if the images were pirated from other eBay sellers. If so, you will have a VERY compelling case with eBay . . . in fact, pointing out the fact that the images were "borrowed" by your seller will likely guarantee you get your money back without going through the dispute process at all.

I seem to be lost, maybe I read it wrong, but is the first one the coin is a CC but if you got a 1876-P right? I would request a refund, or file a complaint.

On the second one, its a 15 dollar coin, I see a lot like that on ebay. I can sort of tell it has been cleaned from the pictures, maybe others couldnt. Buying on ebay is rough, I bought an 09-s vg cent a few weeks ago that I couldnt really see the pictures too good, and found after getting the coin that there was a large mark on the reverse. I snapped my fingers and said damn, but I ended up selling it and getting my money back. Lesson learned.

Ok, on the 2nd one... the 1851 large cent that has a half cent in the pic: I got a response from the seller saying once I ship it back I'd get a refund. I responded by saying I shouldn't have to pay return shipping since the pictures were stolen from another auction. He then immediately refunded my money. Now, what to do about feedback.... hmmmmm....

Oh got ya.......I would be honest. If he sold you a coin, but it was not the right one, I would mention that. Even if he refunded your money, it is still wrong to sell items not what they are.

I disagree. You got your money back, and also learned a valuable lesson... just walk away...

Leave negative feedback, it's a no brainer.

That was a joke, but what is the lesson? Do not buy off ebay because people are crooks? He bought a coin, and he did not get the coin listed. Set aside the fact it was more than likely cleaned, it listed a half cent and he got a large cent. Threads like this make me laugh at the people who think a lesson should be learned.

I have seen/bought deals off ebay, like an auction that ends at midnight where not too many bid, so deals can be had. But getting a coin not listed is not right, I mean why bother sending feedback if its not true, or request something for your trouble.

I would word it, "well thanks for the refund but you wasted my time, and would perfer something in return." Tell him feedback can come positive or negative.

Ebay is a risk, plain and simple. I was viewing this and chuckled.....

To anyone who would offer, pay and sit while they wait for a coin to ship, for that price is braver than I.

Buying coins on ebay is a risk, and to the OP, ebay has measures to help this from being a problem, (feedback, buyer protection, ect.) You only spent $45~ on both coins, at least you didnt spend $500+. Send messages, request a refund, and go from there, if not get up with ebay. They sold coins listed for something they were not, I am sure ebay will handle it.

How many negative feedbacks have you left from that account, and over what period of time? While it's certainly possible to have bad experiences with a whole string of auctions, it seems likely that eBay watches for that sort of pattern to guard against abusive buyers.

So you never went to the police to try and get your $5 back?

Coins776 paid $5 for a lot of foreign coins. Deceptive description of the item (but nothing against the ebay rules). He wanted a refund, something happened between him and the seller, coins776 asked if he should go to the police over the matter.

Yep, you should definitely petition this if you can find some hard evidence. I don't like to use ebay anymore. When we first started out on the net a decade ago we bought a few things that certainly weren't as advertised. Best of luck in trying to get your money back.

Buying raw coins on SleazeBay? Don't get me started. I have no sympathy for the seller or buyer. How many times do hard luck stories have to be posted?

Unless your selling 1-2k per month. You ever read Deal of the day shops feedback.?
    Read about 4-5 of them.

On the second one, did you find the same picture by another seller and sure the one who sold it to you didn't simply cross-ship something and someone else has your coin?

He refunded it, but wondering if he gave any explanation. Mistakes happen, and if I believed it I'd not leave a negative. If he is intentionally misleading then there should be a negative.

    Yes!
Most people who return a coin and get a refund do not leave negative feedback even when it was justified and even when the seller intentionally tried to rip them off. Dishonest sellers maintain a good feedback rating by giving refunds and then hoping the buyer doesn't leave negative feedback.

Giving a refund doesn't make up for intentionally trying to rip off buyers.

If they deserve a negative give it to them. Even if you got a refund.

Problems, problems... we all have problems. Sometimes these little problems can become a seller's worst nightmare. Since coins776 eBay account was suspended, eBay removed the negative he gave the seller. Here's a link to the thread you questioned.

As far as the OP is concerned, don't sell eBay buyer protection short. You can get your money back for both items and leave negative FB if you so desire (but think long and hard before doing that). Buying coins on eBay is the same as buying coins "on approval".
