Can anyone provide any detail on this medal? All I have found is a on the American Numismatic Society. http://numismatics.org/collection/0000.999.42735
Well, the inscription says Robert Ball · Münzen-Handlung · Berlin (on the medal, the U-umlaut is written as an U-E combination). And numquam dormio is Latin and means something like I never sleep. Guess that is meant in the sense of always being alert - with those coin cases I would be on alert too. The book that the woman has in her lap shows some text, as does the one next to her feet, on the right. And while the large images show lots of details, I cannot really decipher the text ... Could be "numus" (referring to coins?) and "madal" (referring to medals?), but I am not sure. Ball was a coin dealer in Berlin, as the inscription says. Later, in the 1930s, the name of the company was Robert Ball Nachf., i.e. successor(s). Edit - Here is a similar medal, apparently from 1900, with a different inscription around the woman though: http://www.muenzauktion.com/mueller/item.php5?id=12512 Christian
The books do say "numis" and "medal". Thanks for the info. This came in a box of coins I acquired from the son os a WWII to veteran.
I can't tell you any more than Christian did, but you might consider giving that medal a good soak in 100% virgin olive oil to remove the crud. Chris
