This coin was in the 1864-L Indian Head spot in a Whitman book I bought. I think I see the "L" in the ribbon and the bust looks pointy. Would you say it was an 1864-L? It needs to be soaked in Verdi-care to get at least some of the verdigris off it.

The coin is in such bad shape I can't see an L, I'm not saying it isn't there.

I thought I saw it but think I may be mistaken. It looks like part of the "L". I was mostly looking at the bust shape to see if it is pointy.

Here is an 1864 to compare it too.

Here is a closer picture of the first one. The second one is not an L. It is round.

I meant, this is a rounded bust 1864 to compare it to. It is not an 1864-L.

I think that many people have a difficult time figuring out the 1864-L on low grade and damaged coins like this. To me, the coin looks like it has a pointed bust and is similar to the coin MarkH posted when I examine with my loupe. The second coin I posted is definitely rounded and I used it as an example of a lower grade rounded bust. That is why I think you have to watch when purchasing them. This coin was part of partial set in a Whitman book and was in the 1864-L hole. I know I was depending on that the old collector could tell the difference.

the grade of the coin is so low that it does not matter whether or not it is the L variety.
