Why intentionally scratch proof coins?

I bought 3 1957 and 1 1958 quarters yesterday and they were originally proof coins. However, somebody went and put decent scratches on the obverse of all of them, some more than others. I just don't understand why you would do that, since they are all almost perfect except for 1 with a few spots on it. The reverses are immaculate. If anyone knows why someone would do this, please let me know your thoughts. IMG_3097[1].JPG IMG_3099[1].JPG

Scratched as an attempt to hurt a cheating spouse?

I'll suggest that someone at some point wanted to save $1.99 and not buy another 2x2 storage box, so the squeezed more stapled flips into the box they had.

    Makes sense to me..........

All the more reason to cinch them staples down and even then you run the risk of scratches occurring.

If it was caused with intent, it was caused by an immature mind. Not all minds work correctly.

Maybe the buyer insisted he would only pay for the bullion value and that is what he got..

No, they look intentional, since they are mostly crosshatch like the # symbol

Ya I did, they're so nice except for those scratches it's really a shame, the reverses and rims are perfect

People do things just because they can, I doubt there was much thought involved at all.
