Was playing with my new microscope and found this on one of my shield nickels. The 71 in the background looks smaller than the 71 in the foreground. Just curious - I listed it as re-punched. I think I am gonna have fun with the scope, but it does not do a whole coin the way I would like. I think I will actually have to learn to use my camera.
I agree, it looks to me like a repunching of the date -- not sure if this particular one is rare or valuable, but repunching is not all that uncommon for shield nickels. Thanks for sharing...Mike
Nice find. It looks like FS#5-006.5 in the Cherrypickers guide. It claims the coin is valued at $200 in XF and $650 in MS-63
Good enough for me - no not valuable and I do not go by the cherry pickers prices. I am using the new scope to attribute some of my shield nickels and missed this one with loupe. The scope does not do bad on anything - just wish it would do pictures like yours(my camera might - but I am actually going to have to read the directions). Maybe I can do a snap shot of the doubling on my 1872 and 1875 just for the fun of it.
OOPS - the post after yours was not directed to your post. I appreciate the input - I graded the coin as VF-30. I only read leadfoots post and was busy replying while taking other pictures. And yes I was on shield nickel.net looking at the numbers.
