I have 3 UNC $5 1864 notes, 1 UNC $10 1864 note, and 1 ~VF $500 1864 note that I'd like to get slabbed/graded. I would like to know if PMG- or PCGS-slabbed notes carry more value, and also is either company a little more forgiving (higher grade) with their grading? Thanks!

  4. If your just looking for someone to put a high grade on your notes go with pcgs, ifyour looking for someone to put the correct grade on your notes go with PMG or the new CGA.

Sorry, I dont have any pics handy. I am not an expert in notes, but the UNC have no folds or corner issues and are nicely centered. I am hoping they grade in the low MS.

Thanks so much Bill. This is what I was after. PCGS's fees are a bit higher than PMG's, but not too much. Sounds like it might be worth going with PCGS. I am an avid coin collector, and not that interested in venturing off into banknotes, so I'll probably just flip them and reinvest in my coins. Any other thoughts or advice for me?

  7. coin0709,
If your just going to flip them I may be interested, maybe we could do a trade. I have a large coin collection that I inherited awhile back and have no use for. Have a lot of complete sets, everything from Cents to Silver Dollars and some Gold. If your a collector and have a want list I may have something your looking for. I'm not a dealer, only a currency collector so if you have some notes I'm looking for maybe we can get togther on some kind of trade.

The fact of the matter is PCGS will have the highest resale value with PMG a close second for a note of the same grade. Many knowledgeable collectors will stay away from any CGA graded note, even the new CGA. If that 1864 $500 is truly VF it will go for some very nice money.
