...and others I'll be happy to discuss any that are found interesting but most have been covered either on my pages or on CT over the years. I'll leave you with a question: What US coin is fourree if we use the definition as plated including the edges to conceal a cheaper core and look like the coins were struck from a better, more pure metal? Clad dimes and up do not count since there was no effort to cover the copper stripe around the edge.
Is it the 40% Kennedy Halves, Doug? I don't see any copper on the edge of my examples. I know the inner core is a silver/copper alloy.
id say the new pennys as well. keep the cool pictures coming are most fourres cheaper or more expensive then normal silver
Here's a possible official coin made in bronze to save silver or was to be made outside there realm, so the silver and gold wouldn't fall into enemy hands, they call these limes coins.. Julia Mamaea ..222- 235..AD. Limes bronze, only silver coins made... 20mm x 3.75 g
I posted this coin only last week, but I don't mind repeating myself. Vespasian. A.D. 69-79. fouree denarius (2.85 g, 19.5 mm). CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS..., laureate head right / TR POT IMP II COS VIII DES VIIII PP, Fortuna standing left, holding rudder and cornucopia. cf. RIC 141, RSC 610. This coin has the additional aspect of being a mule - although the obverse belongs to Vespasian, the legend on the reverse belongs to Domitian. Doug suggests that the portrait looks more like Domitian than Vespasian, and I'm inclined to agree, making the legend on the obverse the only part of the coin belonging to Vespasian. Who knows what the devil happened in the minting of this piece, but it's almost certainly an illegal counterfeit.
I posted a Domitian and Vespasian fourree a while back too!!! Here are a few others.. Octavian (Augustus).63BC.- 14..AD.. Ancient counterfeit...fouree.. 19mm x ? Julius Caesar..49- 48..BC.. Ancient counterfeit...fourree. 17mm x 2.65 g.
John, weren't you attempting to put together a set of fourree denarius of the First 12 Caesars? Looks like you have a darn good start.
I was referring to the current US cent which is copper over a cheaper core of zinc. The 40% silver halves of 1965-1967 kept the silver appearance by the outer layer being 80% silver and 20% copper and the inner layer being 21% silver and 79% copper. The edge will show the slight color difference but not as strong as on the later ones with red copper in the middle. 40% is the overall average.
Why yes jw, i'm trying to get the 12...i would like to have all silver or bronze, it was my Brother Chris that was building the 12 Caesars fourree, i think he got most of these from you...your lucky that you have all 12 and don't have to try to buy them now..
