Hello everyone! I'm a rookie cherry picker and new on here. I need info from some more expirenced collectors... I found a 1988 D Lincoln penny with very obvious doubling on the ear and on the 8. I can not find any info on this error. I called my dad whom has been collecting for 30+ years, had no ansewrs. Is this a new find??!! It defenitley has got me excited. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!!
Welcome. You would need to post pics in order for us to make an accurate assessment. It could be a doubled die, but it could also be a number of other, non-collectable things. Pictures would let us know for sure.
Photos are very blurry. I can't really tell...if I had to guess based on the photos, I would say a well-placed hit (damage), but better pics might reveal more.
Thanks for the new pictures. As I suspected, it looks like the coin has a few contact marks on the ear, giving it the appearance of doubling. In reality it is just damage, and unfortunately worth 1 cent. Keep up the hunt!
I can't really tell what's going on with the 8, but if you claim it is "shadowing", I would guess that it is due do offset die deterioration doubling. This is just an affect that the die has later in its life, and is normal and to be expected. It doesn't really have to do with the strike itself, the die is just deteriorating due to how many coins it has struck. You can read more about it here: http://www.errorvariety.com/OFD/DDD.html Keep up the hunt!
