The most likely thing you have is a plated cent---what you can do is...
Get the weight of the coin.
Post some photos of the coin here.

    If possible please post photos.
It is possible that the coin was struck on a silver planchet, in which case you would have to get it certified.

Well the photos really need to be clear---but that is alright----the thing you need to do is find out the weight.

Just a guess, the pictures are pretty bad, but as shimmy as it is it was probably treated with mercury.
That would give a silvery color and high shine.
Sorry, maybe better pictures would say differently.

I'm inclined to agree about the mercury. Take care, it's dangerous and highly poisonous - don't touch it without plastic gloves !

Sorry a little off topic but... My mother always tells stories of how they used to pass mercury around in science classes to hold in their hands and even had some at home to play with. They called it "quicksilver" I wonder why there aren't more people that were poisoned if it is as toxic as they say it is.

yea it makes sense that holding it once or twice might be less harmful than breathing/ingesting it

I got the bug today and went through all the changejars in the house... i found a 1945 wheatpenny and a 1962 90% silver roosevelt dime... WOOHOO!
