1944 Steel Wheat Penny

    Can someone tell me why there is such a different weight in the pennies I have. Some are 2.67 and others 2.09 and 3.12 to 3.15

    I don't collect Lincoln cents, but to my knowledge, no steel cents were made in 1944. It's possible that the weights vary depending on the type of "dip" that was applied. In the 50's & 60's, it was very common to use mercury for science projects.

    I do believe that a few 1944 steel cents have been authenticated. In fact, I believe I saw one in person a few years ago at the FUN Show.
