I should have thought to include numismatic gifts that you GAVE as well as those received. I gave two of my good freinds who love history each an ancient roman coin of emperor Valens. And to the daughter of another close freind, I gave a 2001 silver eagle, which was the year she was born.

Well my stepson wanted to start a Franklin Half Collection.
So I got him a nice 1952 NGC MS65 with some nice toning to get him started.
I think we now have a new collector in the family. :thumb:

    I hope y'all don't mind if I refer to a previous Christmas.

My wife, who tragically died before her time last year, gave me a coin at Christmas 2004 that I would never have bought myself and in fact wouldn't have wanted. But because she gave it to me, I would never part with it.

It's a $5 coin from the Republic of Liberia that commemorates the Battle of Gettysburg. The obverse features generals George G. Meade and Robert E. Lee, with a U.S. and Confederate flag between them. The reverse has a scene of ocean, palm tree, airplane and plow, and various other things.

It looks to me like real silver, but then I'm no expert. Of course the coin is a familiar attempt by a Third World country to bring in some revenue from numismatists (or anybody else). If anybody in the forum could tell me anything about this piece, I would be interested. Of course I will always treasure the piece as a final gift from my wife.

I'm thinking DON'T CLEAN, and send it to NCS for expert conservation and slabbing.

My wife gave me a 1916-d Mercury dime authenticated by ANACS. I tried to post a better picture of it but I'm still trying to figure out my new camera.

I got a complete set of BU war nickels, an 1879 IHC G-4 damaged, ten rolls of circulated Lincoln cents to search, Volume 2 of the Cherrypickers guide and an AU series 1917 $2 bill. I am not a very serious currency collector so I don't know its value but it is a beauty.

But I think many of us would agree that it is priceless. Thanks for sharing.

I wasn't fortunate enough to recieve any numismatic gifts this year, but I tried to spread the joy by giving out 2 dollar bills and I made some 2 dollar bill oragami presents which I gave to the mrs.

Along with the $10 Eagle I (which did arrive today) my sister-in-law bought me a copy of "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual" by Scott A. Travers. Will be reading some on my vacation next week.
