Got some coins from my grandmother after she passed. This one I was thinking was just messed up - like scraped or ground or something. But looking closer It seemed strange that parts of the head were distinctly jutting into the rip and that the rip had distinct raised areas (didn't look ground or carved). The back is pretty normal looking. There are some striation marks along the edge, but they are concentric (not parallel), much closer together than you would see on a pair of pliers or hemostats, plus they go toward the center. T are only visible on the recessed surfaces (fainter ones on the front too). I guess they could have been buffed or worn off the raised parts, but some are in deep recesses like within letters and between the buffalo's legs. Seems like too much work for someone to have done on purpose. My grandmother died over 20 years ago and probably had this coin for a long time before that. She had this one in a book, meaning she was more interested in the date than in the potential flaw. Maybe there's some other explanation. I'd really appreciate an expert opinion. (BTW, the grey area on the left of the photo is just shadow from my light source. I'm new to this. Thanks Much.

Looks like it could be a nice lamination error.

Thanks very much non_cents. I was thinking maybe that's what it was just based on a few pictures I found on the web, but didn't find any where the error went all the way across the coin. Appreciate your quick reply and your opinion!

Thanks Typ. Glad you agree with non_cents. It will go to my daughter someday. She's only 1 yr. old now, but I'll pawn my guitar before I give away her great grandmother's coins.:)
