Hey everyone, This one came into my store today and i´m having trouble getting the information on this as I have not delt with these coins before. If anyone knows these I would be thankful for all the information Siggi The coin weighs 6.5 grams
Siggi - I believe what you've got there is a Phillip V 1714 2 escudos from Mexico, M. J. The coin has lost a bit of weight, probably from clipping (spec weight is 6.7 gm), and it's not in the best of shape. So value is somewhat hard to estimate. Normally it's a rather expensive coin when in better condition, as you can see here - http://www.mcsearch.info/search.htm...n=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ol=1&sort=&c=&a=&l=#0 Just a guess on my part, but maybe around $1500.
Thank you Sir, Appriciate the help. I have been going like crasy over the web and what is bugging me is the design is off from every 2 escudo I have found. This came from a shipwreck that was found in daytona in the year 2000 but I have still to get that information as well. Well this is going to be a all nigheter I guess
Look at the link I gave ya Siggi, there are several coins there found in the same wreck. It's from the 1715 Plate Fleet. And I'm almost positive I have identified the coin correctly based on the books I have. The design, what you can see of it on your coin, matches perfectly.
Thanks again, I looked at the link The design is correct in some aspect but some parts of the coin does not fit at all. I have no idea if that makes any differance to the coin but as I cant find one that has the same details I will linger on
The beaded ring ? Look at the second to last coin found at the link I provided. The circles outside the quatrefoil, found on other examples. Those are just die differences, varieties of the same coin. The shield design is what defines the coin Siggi. Look under the lower lion, see that raised square inside the blank field ? That part of the shield design was only on the 1714 Mexico escudos coins. All other Mexico dates have a different design. And all other Spanish colonial mints used an entirely different design.
I have just been informed that the coin is a fake. Made in the 80s -ohhh well you win some and you loose some
That's always possible, but before you just ditch it you might want to send the pics to Daniel Sedwick and ask him - http://www.sedwickcoins.com/ Just in case
