Hi all - my dad was recently going through some old items that belonged to my grandfather and came across the usual jar of keepsake coins. Most are from the early to mid 1900's, but the only two that seemed noteworthy were a 1903 Barber dime and what appears to be an 1876 Seated Liberty dime - but the reverse on that is some strange pattern I've never seen before. Can anyone identify what this is?! (the coin on the left, obviously...!)
It's a love token. They would engrave a coin with the initials of a lover. Usually done by a jeweler or watchmaker. Very popular in the 1880s. They do sell for more than a damaged dime would. Yours is a nice example. Worth about $10-$15.
It is hard as they made them so fancy , it's also hard to guess the order . I got one that I believe has my late wife's initials but the J may be an I , but it works for me . Nice pick up .
I think the image of the love token is upside down. I see an E and either an I or J. The third letter is probably an O.
