I need someone to whisper words of wisdom to me, should I let it be or not. I traded with an old gentleman for this 1964 proof set last year because I like the toning and he considers it tarnish, so it was win win for each of us. I don't know if I should leave it intact or take out the coins so that it doesn't get beyond "pretty". I don't know if I will ever send it in for grading or not. I do want to be able to get the most out of it if I ever sell it before I croak. What would you guys do? Please let me know.
To stop the toning where it is, you should bust it out and put it in a holder that will better preserve its state. I wonn't start a fight by recommending something, but leave it up to you. Most third party packaging would be better for it than the mint plastic.
You *could* just cut out the Philadelphia tag and the penny. That would probably slow down the reactions. Also, the nickels start to look a nice blue color as the penny turns more yellow/white.
Why not just leave it in the packaging but change the storage conditions. Take it away from humidity and cardboard, and that half should not tone anymore. Oh, and McCartney rules!
I go with the old gentleman who sold it. the half is kinda ugly. the nickel is getting that nice color a lot of them do.
