hi all, i got this with some uncleaned coins before i went on coin hold (so this wasn't a gift from byzanta claus), but i'll be darned if i can figure out what it is . it is a variation of the prize crown/urn reverse, can find many similar, but i can't find one just like. it's 6.7g and 24mm. any id help would be appreciated.
not really, to only part of the obverse legend i can read is the IVS ending. several of the letters on the reverse are readable ...POK above for example. bing, what is your new avatar? i've been trying to figure it out!
For whatever reason, I think your coin looks like Gordian III, but I'm probably wrong. My avatar is not the best image. It's a "manhole" cover in Rome with the letters SPQR
Cool coin, chrsmat71 ... Ummm, did it arrive in a big bunch of coins, or from an uncleaned lot? (I'm just wondering how you acquired this coin? ... another Byzanta Claus?)
no luck with legend search so far. manhole cover....that's what i thought. goridan iii, maybe severus alexander? no, it wasn't an uncleaned coin. i purchased it a while back with a small group of uncleaned chinese coins....already had the shipping payed for so i snagged this from the same dealer. i just thought it looked very cool.
Sorry Chris, I re-read your intro-post and discovered that it arrived with an uncleaned lot of coins "before" your wagon-stint (it sounds a bit shady, but I will go with it)
hey WC, that was my first thought also..but now i'm strongly leaning toward emisa (or emesa)...and i think it is elagabalus, but i'm less sure about this. similar to this coin..note the obverse ending, similar legend above and below urn. this was from here.. http://www.tantaluscoins.com/coins/16708.php similar reverse lettering to this one...note the "POKE" up at 1 o'clock and on mine. what do you all think?
It is an issue from Edessa, probably of Elagabalus. The reverse legend reads MHTPO K EMICΩN/ ΠYΘIA. I can't find a variety with E E flanking the urn, but that's not surprising - there are no good references for provincials of this era. I would usually check SNG Copenhagen (which I don't have at home, sorry), BMC, and CoinArchives.
