Who's cutting back?

With our economy on the rebound, or so some would have us believe, I'm trying to understand the current market dynamic better.

Who out there is still cutting back on expenditures?

Have your collecting habits changed permanently?

Do you spend as much as before, but buy differently than you used to?

Are you buying more PMs and fewer uncommon dates, or vice versa?

All answers from all walks of lfe would be greatly appreciated.

In terms of coins I have cut back a l0t, but that's mostly due to increase purchases for other things, namely a house. Most of my coin purchases now are for re-sale to built up my coin funds.

I wander around the market, sometimes not in the mood to buy. However, in the last couple of months, I have bought a double eagle, two eagles, 4 half eagle sized pieces, $50 in FV 90%, a group lot of about 500 SE Asian pitis, a few central asian, and other misc. Yeah, I haven't cut back, but probably need to. :( My main problem is I have wanted some gold coins, but haven't felt comfortable until the recent market softening.

At shows, I haven't seen much difference. Bullion still gets attention, low quality US coin dealers sit on their rear with no customers, but dealers with nicer material still sell. World coins seem to be moving better than US coins in this area actually, at least versus the past.

Not at all, heck I have been out buying up all the goodies that have been off the radar for awhile. Bargains to be had. I also search coin from my many financial institutions but I notice the fantastic finds are starting to wane a bit - a sign the economy is actually getting better. Auction results from the ANA are also reflecting strong prices for the sessions I have watched.

Not a fun position to be in, I'm sure. I feel your pain.

I am slowing down only because I currently buy only CAC type coins that are affordable to me, around $200.00. I've already bought all the 'easy' ones that can be had without much of a premium. There are a lot of Types I need, but these for whatever reason seem to have a wide spread on the CAC and non-CAC equivalent. So I am just sitting buy, slowly building my coin funds for when the right coin comes along.

Yep... trying to stretch that Social Security check to buy coins isn't working for me, lol.

Sorry to hear it sir. On the plus side, numismatics is an area which you can continue to enjoy and learn regardless of whether you hold the coins or not. I am glad you are still here participating. :)

Coin buying for me has nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with my personal situation. As my other expenses increase, I cut back, but if I am comfortable with my bank balance I might splurge a bit. I don't really understand the mentality of those who buy coins based on the markets, but I'm a collector, not an investor.

Silver prices slowed me down a bit. I simply couldn't justify paying inflated prices for something I believed and still believe to be the result of a speculation fueled bubble. Switched focus away from precious metal coins and started looking at lower mintages, rare strikes and substantial errors, among circulation coins.

A sound strategy. Even if silver does not come back down, you've moved to areas of the hobby that many deep pocket collectors will still participate in, regardless of metals prices.

Recent purchases of the West Point ASE sets, a half eagle, and the RP gold buffalo will force me to stop for a few months. But no, same (roughly) buying habits as before these purchases.

I'm literally eating Cup O'Noodle for lunch everyday just so I can buy more Bullions.

I haven't cut back in $$ but the better coins I want these days are higher dollar items so I buy less often. when I need extra money I sell off a couple more nice but lower value coins to put towards something I like. I think I have a better collection of fewer coins.

Since I am somewhat new to coins, really got into it DEC 2012. I would say I am still at a constant buying/selling the past few months. I find that when I started, I everything. I mean if it was cheap I bought it. That got to the point where I have a bunch of nothing I want to keep. I now am trying to finish my albums, which is costly. But I am now looking at getting into Large and Half cents. That is a way for my to keep costs lower. Also, it keeps me motivated in buying older coins at a good price.

Yes, I'm in favour of that and at a point where I don't want to add too much just for the sake of adding. I want the fewer coins, but a better quality collection. There are a bunch I should probably trade, but, find myself attached. Silver proofs and mint products, especially those received as gifts, will be first to go, when the time and opportunity present themselves.

Lol, I wouldn't say he has a problem. I would say he is doing great things for his future. Great job!
