Well. I've been working on putting together a 1937 George VI type set.

You would think that 1937 wouldn't be that old of a year, and many BU pieces would exist.

Heck on the american side of things type in "1937 MS cent" you will find dozens of them.

So I'm starting to wonder if britons did not "put back" as many coins as we did?

The prices are cheap, but finding them is another thing.

Actually Tim, I would recommend saving your dosh for awhile and buying one of the boxed sets of coins - the set without the pricey gold coins of course. It is a cool set with all the different denominations from 1/4d - Crown. They really are not that hard to find with a bit of looking and I sort of want one myself.

Boxed sets, you mean a specimen set?

Those are proof issue, unless you're talking about something else.

The proofs were issued in reasonable numbers and there are two sets, one with gold and one without. The gold was just an NCLT issue by then so it doesn't really matter - the other coins were all issued for circulation or distribution(Maundy coins included).

I'm really wanting a mint set. The last proof set from '37 sold for over $500.

Even if I spend $20 for farthing, half penny, nickel brass 3d. and penny. ($80), $30 for the silver threenub, six pence, and shilling ($90) $40 for the half crown and $60 for crown ($100), I will have only spent $270 and that of course is spending way more than book value. Comfortably I should be able to put this set together for around $150-$200.

They do look cool in the box set, especially with the Maundy coins.
