Opinion on Recent PCI Grading

I was just wondering if anyone has submitted any coins to PCI for grading recently. If so, what has been your opinions of their grading? I submitted some Morgan dollars and some better grade type coins to them this summer when they offered some special discounts. I primarily had the coins encapsulated as a method of preservation.

However, I felt that their grading was very accurate and, even strict at times. I didn't feel that any of my coins were overgraded, and I felt some could have been a point higher, especially some MS-63 Morgans that looked like many NGC 64s.

I know their has been talk about how strictly the TPGs are grading presetly. Has PCI seemed to have recently become more strict and conservative to anyone? I know some of their older slabs are very conservatively graded, and that some of their slabs from a few years back are perceived as highly inaccurate and overgraded. What about their grading presently?

    Any thoughts or opinions???....

    Shortgapbob:
I have heard that PCI has been doing a very good job lately with their grading. Recently I have heard two dealers talking that they think that PCI has been very good, however, perhaps their problem is that in the past they (PCI) were considered to be very 'loose' with some of their grades.
As long as you are happy and the coin appears accurate, who cares?
    Good luck.

Well I haven't sent off any to PCI but my dealer sends a ton off to them----he has aways liked them but he said that lately they are getting tigher---and I agree.
It seems that back when PCI started grading coins that they were really good and their grading was great---then some people left and their grading went down hill---from what I've seen lately their grading is getting better and maybe can be trusted again.
Of course I would always suggest that the person buying a PCI slab know HOW to grade the coin themselves and I would always suggest that you buy the COIN not the holder.

PCI recently hired JT Stanton as their CEO. I wonder if this has something to do with the change in grading.

Is JT Stanton the individual who cowrote the Cherrypickers Guide?

Yes he is. The co-author was Bill Fivaz.

In case anyone from PCI is reading this thread, now might be a good time to make a slight change to the slab design so that collectors can distinguish between the coins with the newer stricter accurate grading and the older loose grading. This might be a way to catapult the company into the first tier.

    Consider this free marketing advice.

Can you post pics of these coins you have had recently graded by PCI ? Without seeing examples of what you mean I could not offer an opinion on their present ability.

I will say that in the early years, the late '80s and very early '90s, PCI did have a certain level of respect in regard to their grading - but not since then. But that is not to say that an accurately graded coin cannot be found in a newer PCI slab, on the contrary they can be found. But only rarely, most of the time the coins are vastly over-graded. I consider a coin graded accurately by PCI to be an accident and the exception, definitely not the rule.

    Hey Doug
I posted photos of the two Dimes I got a few weeks back---1916-D and 1942/1 Dime---and most of the collectors here graded them the same as PCI---AG and F-CLND.
