The medal that brought about the Lincoln cent...

    This piece walked in today.

    While this medal is interesting... it has a much more interesting story associated with it that directly led to one of the most popular US coins of all time. This is called the Roosevelt Medal... or as some call it the Panama Canal Medal. This piece was issued to civilians and military who served in the construction of the canal. This piece is named to E. F. Sprague.

    How does this have anything to do with the Lincoln Cent?

    This medal was designed by Sculptor Victor David Brenner. Brenner was a fan of Lincoln and had done many pieces featuring Lincoln. While the president sat for Brenner in the design of this medal Mr. Brenner voiced his opinion of a new coin he envisioned.... one featuring Lincoln. Theodore Roosevelt found the idea appealing and asked Brenner to submit designs... and history was made...
