Just picked this one up today. I thought it looked like a nice xf coin. Thoughts?? Thank Jerry http://www.ebay.com/itm/Large-cent-...true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557#ht_23wt_905
$5.00 shipping? Ouch... My grade is VF-35, although I would need a better pic to make a better assement. The coin does have some verdigris, but a lot of old copper does. Book Value in VF20 is $68.00, and $132.00 in XF, as you can see, quite a jump. There appears to be some issues with the top of the rim on the obverse, but that might be lighting.
since I live in the same town as the seller I thought we could bypass shipping charges and meet in person. I was in the xf40 grade
it sort of looks like variety n-16. the 8 in the date looks closer to the 3 than on the other 1838 varieties, and the N in the word ONE and the N in the word CENT, both seem to be broken. at least from what i can see in the photos.
another person on another site thought it looked like an N-1 Can not find a pic of n-16 to compare. Looking at coin in hand I do not see any break in the n on cent.
if the N in ONE and the N in CENT are not broken, then i don't think it is N-16. i think that you are right about it being N-1. here are photos of N-1.
the N-1 is an R-1 and it has repunching on the 1 in the date. your coin looks like it has the same repunching of the 1 in the date.
