Pupa, Pl means the coin has prooflike surfaces. This means that it will be like a mirror, and be highly reflective. If you can hold a business card in front of a morgan, and clearly read it 2-4 inches away, it is pl. Above that it is dmpl. The reflectivity must also be clear, and not muttled at all anywhere in the fields.
Thanks for the info , I got me a 1886 Morgan in a very oldddd PCGS holder that is a 64MS , a couple of people have said that it looks better than most 65MS`s that they have seen and maybe even better than that , so I am thinking bout sending it off for a re grade , like alot of people here I don`t have the equipment to post a decent pic here to show it off but I will try and find someone that can do that for me.
It seems that over the years, grading standards have gotten slightly more lax from the TPGs. Many coins in the old PCGS slabs will get a point or two more if resubmitted, though I doubt it will pick up a PL or DMPL designation if it doesn't have it now.
PL and DMPL PLs and DMPLs carry a significant premium over non PL and DMPLs as well ... I like them Look here for more info: http://www.dmpl.org Or, scan through the PCGS registries to see some great pictures ...
Then there is DMPL, Deep Mirror Proof Like. Also Cameo DMPL: Cameo (the eagle & liberty look white against a dark or black background) Deep Mirror Proof like.
