Just saw a 53 on sale for $130. How much difference 53 and 55 is I don't know. I would hope $180 at least. I see the 53 does not say exceptional paper quality. http://ccc.mybigcommerce.com/1863-o...lina-raleigh-civil-war-year-pmg-53-about-unc/
Strange.......I see Dodd has signed for both North and South Carolina.......I see Dodd on the South Carolina 50c for that period.
I don't believe William H. Dodd signed for SC as well. Are you sure you're not looking at a signature of J.W. Doby on the SC note? Do you happen to have a picture? As far as the NC note, $130 is about right if not a little expensive for the 53, I hope I am misreading and you didn't pay $310 for a 55?
55 and 53 numerical grades are very close in terms of condition. They are also poorly distinguished from one another. One grader may assign a note a 53 grade, and another may assign the same note a 55 grade. The EPQ designation means the note has Exceptional Paper Quality. It commands some premium over a note without the designation.
