This is an 1871 Prussian "Seiges Thaler" commemorating their victory over France. I really like the "smoky" look on the reverse. Just though I'd post the photo. :smile Any idea what causes this kind of toning?
that is a very old coin.... silver turns that dark grey. leave it that way. what an awesome design. thanks for posting it. may I ask how much you paid for it ?
Not sure if you can see it but there are darker gray streeks running thru it as well, it looks almost smoky. This coin, and a few others came from a friend who does house clean-outs. Whenever he finds coins I get the first shot at them. This came in a group that I payed $25 for a couple of years ago.
I found your coin in my 19th century Krause German States/Prussia KM#500 Thaler 18.5200 g. .900 silver, .5360 oz. , Ruler: Wilhelm I , Subject: Victory of France 1817A, A=Berlin mint mintage-880,000 Values: F-$17.50 VF-$25.00 XF-$40.00 UNC-$75.00 not sure what your coins grade is ? VF-XF
I think it's borderline XF, thanks for looking that up for me! I had no idea of it's value, sounds like I did ok on that purchase. I also got a bunch of junk silver when I bought it!
Will do spirityoda, there are a few listed on Ebay, I just went and looked after your last post. I'm pretty sure I'm in the XF grade after looking there
yup your at least looks original and not cleaned XF-AU I would guess at least $75-100.00+ maybe even more. I am looking at 1 now on Ebay Item number: 400481933235 it looks AU-UNC but I can not see if it's cleaned. the detail is amazing. that MS-63 up for auction looks terrible. zero detail at all. and 1 other 1 that looks great but cleaned (shiny) to its death ugh I hate to see that.
25?? you are very lucky, let me tall you that!! i search ebay for thaler coins every day in hope of a bargain like that
