When I was trying to complete my BU wheat penny set a while ago I stumbled across this at my local coin shop. It appears that the last "5" is doubled (poor mans double die) and there are die cracks on Lincolns head. I think this is worth about $5-$9 (far from what the real double die is worth) but would like other opinions of the price. Thanks,
This form of die-deterioration doubling was very common on 1955 cents, but yes, in unc condition you can find people on Ebay who will pay a few bucks for them. Just make sure you don't list it as a doubled die.
I think your estimate of $5-9 is off, but uneducated buyers on ebay tend to bump up the price, so I wouldn't be surprised if it got that price.
This is one of those coins where, just because someone out there will pay a premium, this does not mean it is actually worth it. This is a common anomaly that, to many collectors, can actually detract from desirability and value, but clearly such people would not be your target when offering for sale. Overall, it is not that nice, but a very small premium would be reasonable for someone who really wants one of these. With that said, anyone who pays $5-$9 would only be getting burned IMO.
