I'm seeking out any advice that other Australian lunar coin collectors might have. For example, where do people buy them? I just wish I knew about these before gold reached $618 an ounce and silver ~$12.

They are beautiful coins, although I don't own any. Check out golddealer.com and mintproducts.com to compare with your other sources. My personal opinion is that Ebay should be avoided unless you happen to have a recommendation from someone you trust about a specific dealer who sells on Ebay. Otherwise it's a crapshoot. Coins don't have to be old to be collectible, and these are some of the nicest gold and silver coins around.

Corey,I reckon you should buy some Krugerrands, especially the fractionals.I have got 2 1/10 Krugerrands dated 1984 & 1990 in my collection.

After reading this thread it made me very curious as to which chinese zodiac symbol I was born under. I found out it was the metal pig. After reading about it on here ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_zodiac ... wickipedia I was quite surprised to find it actually described me pretty closely, since I don't believe in that sort of thing. I also found out that theyre were 2 presidents born under the same sign. Andrew Jackson and Thomas Jefferson and former president Clinton's wife to boot. I had hoped it would be the dragon or tiger or something cool, but after reading about the rat I'm quite satisfied to share the sign with these presidents. :) I hadn't heard of these coins before and I was curious about the sign so as to see about which coins I might wish to have in my collection.

    Thanks for the thread,
    Tom

Cloud, thanks for the sites...always useful to compare prices from a variety...golddealer.com actually seems to be almost on par with apmex.com (but still not sure of the quality from apmex).

Dab, glad I can introduce you to a new coin series! I can't wait till I get some in person. I'll post pics ASAP.

Aidan and DeOrc, thanks for the other coin suggestions. I think I'll probably focus on the lunar ones...otherwise I'll end up wanting to collect every coin minted! But I must say, out of the other coins mentioned the Britannia definitely cought my eye.

And gold does seem to be pricey...but I have a few dollars to spare and the coins are great to look at! But I will have to -try- to pace myself so I don't go out spening ~$8000 for the entire set in one night LOL!

"After reading this thread it made me very curious as to which chinese zodiac symbol I was born under."

That wiki page seems good. Just cautioning others that the Lunar years do not correspond with our wester years. A lot of site will just say something like "Born in 1981, you are the year of the rooster." But the New year usually ends up starting/ending in late january/early february. So for the rooster, for example, when I was born was under 5 February 1981 - 24 January 1982 cycle (just barely made that one actually). So just giving you fellow winter babies a heads up :-D.

And it turns out I'm a metal rooster! "Metal is one of the five elements of Chinese alchemy. The archetypal metal is silver." I guess this means I'll definitely have to get them in silver too!! :)

Hi all. Continuing here cause I didn't want to start a new thread. I just got my first lunar in the mail! It is so much more impressive than anything on the web. It is a silver 1 oz goat. When I get a hold of a camera I'll try and post pics, or of others I get in time.

Anyway, onto my question. Does anyone know who did the design for these coins? I tried google but couldn't come across anything. On the right side of the ground the goat is standing on, I can see the initials SA. Any info on this?

Also, on the front, underneath Elizabeth's neck are the initials "IRB". Anyone knows what this is?

    Thanks for the info!

Steve, what does 'Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda' mean? I can't speak neither Welsh nor Scots-Gaelic.

I still collect Welsh traders' tokens, banknotes & postal orders though.

As to my Chinese zodiac sign,I was born in a Year of the Dragon, hence my fierce nature.

I just took notice of the lunars recently, and may start acquiring them in silver myself. Nice designs.
