I'm thinking about putting together a type set for a king or queen. Queen Victoria George V or George VI. Reason I did not pick Edward VII is because some of his coins are very expensive.
Down to George V vs VI, George VI is a tad cheaper, and the silver 3d and the brass 3d both being minted during his reign is cool.
You posted a thread asking for suggestions, and 100% of the actual respondents said "George V." You interpret that to mean, obviously, you should pick George VI, which I'm guessing you already started on prior to posting this thread... thereby wasting the collective time of the three individuals who thought you were being serious.
I said we're down to George VI vs George V. I stated a reason why I like George VI coins, the people on there said George V. I have not decided yet.
Doesn't count Fergie just self proclaimed as a duchess. As for myself I prefer George VI. Basically because he is a decent looking guy and George V's mustache throws me off
Would have been simpler, less time and money consuming to have gone with GVI vs. Queen Mary and James VI!
I put together a Great Britain milled Penny type set that included each of the monarchs. Here is a link where post #17 depicts several of the milled penny coins. http://www.cointalk.com/threads/your-best-looking-british-pennies-post-em.199106/#post-1355401
The 1858 small date in BU lists for 285 Pounds in "British Coins Market Values" and 175 Pounds in Spink. Both my copies are a couple years old. The1858 coin is now in an MS63BN NGC holder. I believe I paid something like US$300 for it about 3 years ago. It's a pretty Vickie. This 1901 penny is proof and I believe I paid something like $25-$30 for it. I'd recommend that the OP consider putting together a Queen Victoria type set.
I LOVE QV, many of her coins are phenomenal. but some of her stuff is expensive. Cheapest 1/2 crown is $90 in unc. Cheapest Crown is $200 in unc. So if we price things by the cheapest...and in UNC. Farthing: $22, 1/2d: $35, 1d: $60, 3d: $25, 6d: $28, 1s: $80, 2s: $80, Double Florin: $150, 1/2 crown: $90, Crown: $150. Add that up, and it's $720, and that does not include gold. With gold, you're talking about $1,400. If we add up the farthing, 1/2d, 1d, 3d, 6d, 1s, 2s, 2.5s (1/2 crown), and 5s (crown) using the cheapest mintages for George VI, I get about $180. With that in mind, we could have a full set with gold (including the half sov and sov) for around $800. I think with my budget and income, the George VI is more doable. I think I will do a QV type set once I'm out of college and making more money.
Thanks for the lesson. She is a beauty that's for sure. I love the portrait on the obverse and Britannia on the reverse. I even love the little flower on the back. Just a beautiful beautiful coin.
