I thought this was a "rot hole" the first pass but I set it aside with some others to check later. That was 3 months ago and today I was going to toss it in the Coinstar jar. I looked a little closer with better light and it looks to me like an imprint mirror image, upside down, of the corner ot the reverse memorial. It could be from something else but the closer I magnify the more distinct the edges become. It doesn't look like a random scrape or after mint damage. I don't know. What are your thoughts? Should I get a safe deposit box or free up another 2x2 for another coin?
When a die is clashed, the designs of the opposite side is transported to the other respective die, and when it is clashed, the design will be struck usually concave on the coin, and the coin above has a depression, its not a clash. Most likely, a quarter's edge hit the head and left a depression of the edge there.
I'm thinking that by "rot hole" you mean zinc rot. That only occurs on copper plated zincs from 1982 and later. What you are seeing on this coin is damage. I've seen this type of damage a lot, and it normally occurs when the coin comes in contact with a large, reeded edge coin.
Yes it did look a little like gears definitely not the memorial building corner. However the "liberty" looks identical to the 1980 DDO-001! The date is worn down so I don't see doubling there but it may be that penny. I'll keep checking. Thanks guys
I can tell you right now it's not DDO-001...no extra thickness in the date, looks like the 8 took a hit.
