Newbie: 1863 North Carolina $10 PMG AU55 EPQ

    Not knowing much about paper money but pulled the trigger on this.

    Strange.......I see Dodd has signed for both North and South Carolina.......I see Dodd on the South Carolina 50c for that period.

    I don't believe William H. Dodd signed for SC as well. Are you sure you're not looking at a signature of J.W. Doby on the SC note? Do you happen to have a picture?

    As far as the NC note, $130 is about right if not a little expensive for the 53, I hope I am misreading and you didn't pay $310 for a 55?

    My error, just checked my scan it was Dodd on North Carolina 50c note.

    55 and 53 numerical grades are very close in terms of condition. They are also poorly distinguished from one another. One grader may assign a note a 53 grade, and another may assign the same note a 55 grade.

    The EPQ designation means the note has Exceptional Paper Quality. It commands some premium over a note without the designation.
