    Hi everyone,

I'm actually new to this forum and coin collecting in general. I picked up on some old coins I was given as a child and have recently started looking into them and found interest in the standing liberty quarters. I came across this particular one for 5 dollars but I need help figuring out which one it is.

From what I can tell it is a type 1, no stars or space for stars under the flying eagle. My issue however is I cannot tell whether it is 1916 or 1917. Obviously I am hoping for 1916 but I want an unbiased view on the coin. So if I could get some opinions on the coin and whether or not it was a good buy, or any other specifics you notice about the coin that I may not know, I'd appreciate it! Thanks so much for your help!

It's really hard to decipher much except what you already know about this coin, so I personally would carry it around as a pocket piece.

It's a '17. The inset squares on the bulkheads are distinct and the shield's riveting is strong. These are two definitive die characteristics of the '17 as opposed to the '16 below.

Good picture of the 16. Like the detail of it with great die characteristics.
    Thanks
