What does everyone display their coins in? I have three small cases that I display coins in. They are nothing really that special, I picked them up for a few dollars at an antique store that I like. The rest I keep in a box and rotate them every now again through the display cases.
I have a curio coffee table that I display an almost complete set of Gallery Mint Museum replicas - looks like $100M of coins. All the real coins are kept in an SDB.
I have 2 old CD cases I installed lighting in. I mounted them vertically and installed glass shelves. I change this display completely twice a year. I keep no gold and very few slabbed coins in it. Those are locked up in the SDB at the bank. I have a few of my bullion rounds on display, just to show variety. I have separate pictures of each level if anyone is interested. I have had this for about five years now and document the changes each time..
I wish I had a photo but my father has a wood working hobby and makes nice display cases for graded coins usually in black walnut.
I don't display my coins. Anything with significant value is in the bank. I take a good picture then hide the coins away. Well, I sort of display some of my coins. I've got 11-12 NGC Registry Sets.
I'm interested in more pictures as that might be one of the best home display for coins I've ever seen. Im hesitant to display that much coin related stuff in my house. I have a couple various coins laying around and a couple albums/reference books on some shelves, but for the most part I don't advertise my hobby all that much.
I understanding storing the coins away since they are valuable. Kind of a shame you can't really look at them besides in picture though.
Very few people know I save coins and paper currency. My neighbor, who lives next door and who we know rather well, doesn't even know. None of my relatives are aware I am a collector either. It is a private matter only known by my immediate family. Besides, someone is home 24 hours a day. If my wife and I are out of town, the entire display is pulled and secured, even while others are still there. This is a good time to change the display when I do this.
I figured that was like right inside the front door with how the dog was laying off to the left in the hallway, so I assumed any guests would see it immediately if they came over. That's my biggest worry at the moment. I'm 26 and have friends that roughly span the 23-30 year old range that I see and that generally come over, so I don't want any of them being idiots and running their mouths to their less respectable friends and unknowingly causing me to be robbed or a similar situation. A couple of my closer friends do know I enjoy coins, but none know the extent or true value of my collection.
Be careful. Black walnut is not a good wood for coins to be around. It emits a lot of gases. Ifyou have to use it, make sure its VERY well dried out. Ihave some that was kiln dried, and then air dried for 25 years, (I bought 200 board feet 25 years ago and never got around to using it). Even then, its not a good choice. Make them out of real mahogany, (not luan from the phillipines), if you want a display case as harmless to coins that wood can be.
Considering the fact that I don't even know the extent or true value of my collection, I doubt any one else does either, lol. In any event, I keep the better stuff in the SDB. I love the display cases, and wish I could do that, but we have too many people in my house and I would be too worried about someone getting the wrong idea.....
there are a lot of interesting ideas here. i figure i will spend the next couple days thinking about it and then forget about it. maybe ill actually do something about it, but more likely just enjoy the idea...
