NOTE: I also posted this on the CONECA forums to get more info, but since I know CoinTalk has decent traffic...thought I'd ask for some opinions here, too. Thanks! Recently, I purchased a lot of clad coins from a customer of a local coin shop (the coin shop told him to take them to the bank, I asked politely if they would mind if I purchased them to check for varieties, and they had no issues with it.) As they were counting the silver, and picking out the wheat cents, they put together a pile of coins they didn't have any use for. (I just wanted to say that right off the bat...they chose everything I bought/they didn't buy.) I had them count the loose coin, the seller counted the rolled coin, and I paid him FV plus $25 for the privilege of cherry picking the lot. I've spent about a week going through everything (about $150 face), and I only have about 7 BU rolls of Lincoln Memorial Cents left to go through. Here is a short list of my findings to this point: *636 dated Buffalo Nickels (circulated) *46 War Nickels (circulated) *15 BU Lincoln Memorial Cent Rolls (1959, 1960D-4, 1961D-2, 1962D-5, 1963, 1963D-1, 1968S) *1938 D Jefferson Nickel (F) Mint Errors: *Lincoln Cent Blank Planchet (2) *1941 Lincoln Wheat Cent Mint Clip (MSBN) *1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent Mint Clip (XF) *1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent Mint Clip (AU) *1957 Lincoln Wheat Cent Mint Clip (XF) *1965 Lincoln Memorial Cent Mint Clip (AU) *1983 Lincoln Memorial Cent "Spiked Head" Obverse Die Crack *1988 Lincoln Memorial Cent Reverse Die Crack, Numerous Die Polish Lines/Scratches *1936 Buffalo Nickel Reverse Die Crack *1964 D Jefferson Nickel Mint Clip (AU) *Roosevelt Dime Blank Planchet Varieties: *1944 D/D Lincoln Wheat Cent (CONECA #2, WRPM-001) (VF) *1956 D/Shadow D Lincoln Wheat Cent (CONECA #8, WRPM-008) (AU) *1959 D/D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #1, WRPM-001) (XF) *1959 D/D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #1, WRPM-001) (MSRD) *1959 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #4, WRPM-004) (MSBN) *1959 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #10, WRPM-010) (XF) *1960 DDO Lincoln Memorial Cent (Unattributed) (MSRB) *1960 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #5, WRPM-010) (MSBN) *1960 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #16, WRPM-016) (AU) *1960 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #23, WRPM-006) (MS Cleaned) *1960 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #26, WRPM-022) (MSBN) *1960 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #63, WRPM-051) (MSBN) *1960 D/D Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA #63, WRPM-051) (MSBN) *1963 D DDO Lincoln Memorial Cent (CONECA 1-O-VII) (MSRB) *1936 D/D Buffalo Nickel (CONECA #2) (VG) *1936 S/S Buffalo Nickel (CONECA #1) (VG Scratches) *1936 S/S Buffalo Nickel (CONECA #1) (F) *1939 DDR Jefferson Nickel (CONECA 1-R-IV) (F Scratches) *9 1941 S Jefferson Nickel "Large S" *18 possible 1941 S Jefferson Nickel "Inverted S" *1954 S/S Jefferson Nickel (CONECA #1) (VG) *1970 Roosevelt Dime "Reverse of 1968" Proof Die Reverse (CONECA RDV-002) (VG) *1970 Roosevelt Dime "Reverse of 1968" Proof Die Reverse (CONECA RDV-002) (F) *1970 D Roosevelt Dime "Reverse of 1968" Proof Die Reverse (CONECA RDV-002) (VF) *1971 D Eisenhower Dollar "Friendly Eagle" (CONECA RDV-006) (MS) Now, I'm poring through the last few rolls of Memorial Cents (a 1961 D BU roll), and I have come across something I've not seen before. There is a large raised area projecting through the lower tail of the 9 of the date. It almost looks like a portion of the 9 was broken off, flipped on its axis, and punched in underneath the final date (sort of gives the effect of those ribbons you see memorializing some particular cause...) I checked my Cherrypicker's Guide...nothing. I checked CONECA's Master Listings...nothing. I checked Ken Potter's Error & Variety Listings...nothing. I checked John Wexler's Coin and Die Varieties website...nothing. Google? Nope. So, I ask you guys/gals...what's going on here? What did I just pay $.01 for? I am including a full coin shot of the obverse and reverse, as well as a few magnified shots of the date/MM. I also will include a black & white version, plus a copy of the black & white version that's been edited a bit in Photoshop.
non_cents - I don't know...it looks WAY too "man-made" to me in hand to be a die crack...having found plenty of those. (Just my opinion, if that makes any cents) xGAJx - Yep. It gets even better when I say I sold the Buffalo nickels already for $275...and turned in about $120 in "true" junk change to the bank. Plus I added about an inch to my glass copper cent jug...
And when CRHing, what kind of magnifying glass or device do you use to look and check the coins for errors? My microscope is overkill so what do i do? I feel like im missing hundred's when I CRH because I can't truly see if it's an error or not.
Yeah, when I got home I was expecting clad Jefferson nickels...was very surprised that they were almost all Buffalo/silver. The seller had over $12k in silver, though...so that's what they were mostly concerned with. No time to search silly clad coinage! xGAJx, when I CRH, I use a 10x BelOMO triplet loupe that was recommended by someone on a coin forum (could have been here? Can't remember...) and a 20x BelOMO triplet loupe if I want a closer look. Got them both on Amazon...liked the build quality and glass quality so much I have a spare standing by in case I lose mine. I also have the Cherrypicker's Guide pulled up on the iPad, and CONECA, VarietyVista, Wexter, and LincolnCentResource pulled up on my laptop's internet browser. Sometimes it probably looks a bit ridiculous...lol
Why do you keep saying "clad Jefferson nickels"? There is no such critter as the Jefferson nickel has never had a clad version. Nice haul BTW.
I think I was just trying to differentiate between silver and non-silver nickels (which is what I was truly expecting when I unwrapped the rolls.) Thanks BTW...spent about 2 hours today picking through the silver nickels the original seller dropped off...picked up this baby out of that bag:
Nice nickel - love the eyes Great haul, I think I would hang out at the coin shop more often and see what else they turn away.
