Now that's a decent grade for a 1800+ years old coins Severus Alexander AE Sestertius 231-235 AD Obv.: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG - Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev.: MARS VLTOR - Mars advancing right, holding spear and shield. RIC 635
That's an amazing Severus Alexander! Mars Ultor... Mars the Avenger... Perhaps promising vengeance against the foreign invaders from Germania and Persia...
What a wonderful looking Sestertius. I did buy a scrappy Dupondius of the type many years ago which is too shabby to share here. I have a soft spot for the type as the following denarius was my first ancient oh so many years ago Congratulations. Martin
I agree with Randy. I have the denarius with this reverse and can only say that it looks like absolute trash compared to your big guy. Martin's post jumped in as I typed. His looks better than mine but you have to love the large format provided by the sestertius.
Thanks for posting the attractive high grade coin. In the news today, there was this Haiku poem that pertains to Mars: It’s funny, they named Mars after the God of War Have a look at Earth This Haiku poem is actually flying to Mars on board a NASA spacecraft later this year.
These are amazing, I would love to see them in person. That Haiku is great too, it is true, we are terrible with war. That's cool that they will be sending the poem to Mars though. I wish we spend more time studying this planet.
Batman this coin is awesome, i wish all mine were like this, very nice, You and Martin should open your own Museum, awesome coin...
