found this coin as an odd-ball in another search (large cent lots if you really care) Anyway something in the coin called to me and I decided it had to be mine. after a little research before and after I would say I got it for about retail so I'm happy with it. I would however like grade opinions. while I think it would probably get "details" "scratched" I'm thinking it would still rate VF 20-25 opinions?
Not terribly bad Weasel. Rather nice indeed. A few issues with the obverse but minor ones at that..........
Look at the clasp on the shoulder. Without it clearly being there, I would have to lean more towards F-15. But its a CBH, so its cool. As far as Overton # I give you a starting place; possibles 103, 106, 107, 114 (I don't think so), 116 (I don't think so), 122. Enjoy it!
I believe it has the details of a F12/F15 but I do not believe it would grade with the scratches. Aside from that though it looks to be a nice coin, interesting variety too. Your coin was struck from a reverse die that was first used in 1829. It is an o-113, R-2, the main pick up points are the filled A's, die crack from S, through O and F and into A, and lastly there was a die chip in the upper knob of the 3 in the date. Nice pickup.
VG-10, not enough detail for it to be a F-12. I hope you didn't pay "retail" for it. Problem free bust halves can be had for retail. I've actually bought slabbed prob free below retail. Nowhere near VF20, this is VF20.
I also believe it is Fine, though you have to be careful with the details of the clasp because they are often weakly struck. Mostly on the earlier issues though. I see where you got the varieties from, I was looking through the Peterson book as well and I was looking in the same spot you were with the I centered under the right of the T. But after 15 minutes of no luck, I switched back over to the good old Overton book and it appears as though the pictures are tilted slightly which is making it seem as though it is under the right when it is centered.
it a fine but hey y beat up this mans coin a honestly think the first bust half in anybodys collection is a big step and i personally love bust halfs i remeber a few year back when i got my first one at the local coin shop i was happier then a kid in a candy store !!! congrats on the first i hope it is one of many to come
It's not a VF20-25, but it is still a nice bustie, especially for your first! Congrats! Here is one I think would grade a VF25 (30 on a good day). Notice the details of the feathers on the reverse...
Details Very Good is closer than fine IMO. Besides the scratches there is also the pockmarks and the rim ding.
Very nice weasel. I'd say fine no problem on grade. Unfortunately for you, you can't just stop at one bustie. You gotta get them all now! It's a curse.
