Interesting South Carolina State quarter

I will give the whole history about these quarters which is known. First, i disagree with anyone downplaying these- as a coin dealer in Columbia, SC. did when they first appeared. So, when anyone wants to find out about them when they are discovered- they see a Associated Press release from 2001 with his statements- and they go ahead and go by what just one person is saying. Notice the Secret Service agent even said this was a high quality thing with no etches or scratches. The coins were made as a political statement over the removal of the Confederate Flag over the SC State House. The gentleman who did these, who had passed away years back- at first only struck $500.00 worth of SC Quarters- so this is how many that were done? Actually what is rarer- are the other 13 states which comprised the Confederacy- from my understanding he made only a couple of sets of these with the same die, and did some extras here and there with some of the states which were part of the 13 in a very limited form. Upon the gentleman's passing- his wife let some people "borrow" the die on occasion to create more- but the quality of the strikes suffered the more the die has been used- and the strikes after what was done initially have not been with the same quality as the first coins were done because some were struck on a garage floor. This left pitting and scratches over Washington's head. The originals will have what appears to be a small square over Washington's head and slight smooth clouding because the original owner of that die did not strike them on a garage floor. I have also seen a couple of Lincoln cents struck with the same die- and those are rarer also because whoever struck those probably could not find new rolls of SC quarters from 2000. I have seen a few examples of this coin from VG circulated to Uncirculated condition. Someone above mentioned he sold 2 for $5 a piece. I have seen higher grade examples sell for $7- $10 a piece, i even saw a pristine one where someone paid $25.00. So now what we have is supply and demand of a countermarked counterstamped coin. This story sort of parallels with Confederate 50 Cent pieces in the 1860's which 500 were ever struck- these sort of follow that- but there are a slight bit more out there. My estimate is probably under 700-800 for the quarters, $500.00 worth i know for fact were done higher quality than later borrowed die examples. I had a very nice example of this coin in which i sent to a fellow with connections to Brunk so the coin could be documented along with the others out there in limited quantities- i got the same story about his eyes also. He may have kept the thing for himself and did not say one word to Brunk about it- i don't know. It's either that- or Brunk has heard of it by now. Bottom line is that these are scarce, they were a political statement for sure, and very few were done....

Jbk: I had three of the South Carolina confederate flag stamped US quarters that I got in vacation in Columbia SC and I can't find mine any longer. I wanted to keep as a souvenir for my kids who moved there. Do you know where I could find a couple of these to purchase by chance?

 

I have a Lincoln cent with the stamp on it. Found it going through my change. Would anyone know it's worth?
