Let's see your toned coins, the best/gorgeous ones you have. Some think it's a flaw I know, but other's like myself think they're beautiful. Here is an (naturally toned) 1889-P Morgan Dollar I'd say would easily go MS-62/63. What do you have? Post Away... Take Care and Merry Christmas Ben
Ben: First, in response to the soon to be posted posts, I don't think that it is AT. Second, A Very Nice Coin! Third, in response to the posts that don't cover answer #1: I don't see any rub, and think that it is unc. Fourth: 62 or 63, who cares, I like it anyway. Besides, I am an old timer who used MS60, MS63 and MS 65. I have never gotten to be able to split hairs like graders are able to do. :thumb:
Thanks Frank for taking a look. I agree with your take on the grade thing, my old-man taught my brother and I coin grades were P, G, F, VF, XF, AU, and BU, then there were the Proofs. Times changed in a hurry for sure... Take Care and Merry Christrmas Ben
I love Morgans picked up 2 in Cologne but no way as nice as that, keep em coming Ben :hail: De Orc
Ben, Great coin. I'm not good at distinguishing the small differences between the uncirculated grades, and my opinion is that people overpay for the super-high grades. Your coin has tremendous eye appeal, and that, to me, is more important than the number.
Wow. That is spectacular! Toning, eye appeal everything. Beautiful. Is there any chance that is a proof? Or is it just a extremely nice Unc?
I should add, that I have no idea if they even made proofs back then. I'm amazed at the level of preservation of many world coins dating back as far as they do.
zaneman: That is a Maria Teresa Taler, and it is a proof. Inspite of the date (1780) they are still being struck today. The coin was the most widely accepted coin of its time, and they feared making any change at all, even the date, would effect the acceptance of the coin. Still, great toning.
This one: It is rainbow toned but there is too much blue in this picture. Will have to retake it one day.
Love em all as for the MT it was used in trade mainly by Arabs and they point blank refused to accept the new coin after she had died and demanded that the old one be restored, they thought she looked motherley De Orc :thumb:
OK Bone, I was going to post this in a new thread, since I picked it up today but then, while photographing it,I remembered this one and thought it would be ideal.Just goes to show that rainbow toning on silver coins is no new phenomenon. Greek "Zeus Head" 1/2 drachma of the Achaean League 196-146 BC minted at Antigonia (Antioch)
Here is a 1957 Franklin which I set at a slight angle so the light would capture the beautiful golden/light blue color developing on this (FBL?) coin. Speedy might recognize it as I posted a picture a year or so ago. I wasn't able to do the coin justice, alas Take care & Merry Christmas Ben
Here is my 1879 Toned Liberty Dime I paid a PCGS Price, but I felt it was worth it, I have noticed they are hard to come by espcially toned. PCGS PF64
