Variety Cents

what should i look for i have been collecting coins for almost 10 years and since joining the forum i have realized that thier are a lot of varietys to look for with pennys nickels and so on but my question is !! Are thier list of what to look for or what should i look for ??? i really need some help i got a bucnh of rolls to look through today so let me know what you got info wise or a good place to get info thanks again Sean

I would also suggest buying books, such as "Strike it Rich with Pocket Change" or "The Cherrypicker's Guide to Die Varieties".

 

You could also get the look at your change books, really helpful.

 

Thanks guys !!! one thing i found is a 2007 cent that seems to be over 2x as thick as a normal 2007 cent is this worth anything or ???

Alright is that an error though like a known one ?? also found a few where it is a little of center !!! is thier any website that will tell me all the lincoln cent variteys known from 2007 with pictures ??

That's when posting actual pictures of the coin comes in handy.

 

these are the 2 thick examples are one the left is the thicker one in both images on the right is a normal 2007 cent !

 

wrong decripton on the last one that is one with a litle doubling over the 1971 i believe what do you think !!

alright these are the 2 from 2007 and the plachets are 2x as thick as normal ones the thick ones are on the left in both images the ones on the right are normal 2007 cents

 

Most likely you just have a well struck 2007 cent. The better the strike the better the rims strike up and the thicker the coins appear on the edge. If it is truly struck on a thick planchet it will also weigh more than a normal coin. So the key to identifying a "thick" coin is the weight not the apparent thickness.

 

Thank you condor i did not know this but after looking through 1000 pennys i have realized that madye small variety hunting is not as fun as one think it takes hours and i dont even know if i found anything of use !! can anybody tell me a way to make it fast and a little easier ??

 

Searching is a game of patience. Read up, know what dates have more varieties than others, and sort your coins prior to looking at them to speed things up.

 

i did i sorted out by year and then went through each year i dont even think i found any variety cents i prolly spent over 5 hours last night looking with no results !!

 

Looking at the first photo it seems that just the rim is higher, and looking at the second photo , it appears that the diameter of that cent is smaller than the diameter of the regular cent. If this is the case, it is a 'dryer' type of coin where pressure on the rim from being spun against the inner drying chamber, has 'squeezed' the diameter and pushed the extra metal vertical on the rim.

 

There are times where you may not find anything. But check coppercoins.com so you know SPECIFICALLY what to look for on certain dates. Again, it takes patience. You will have good days and bad days when searching.
