What's up with this nickel?

Spotted it in my change. At 1st I thought it was worn down so much that the lettering was wearing with the rim.

Well...it's in too good of condition, and when I used a loupe, I noticed there is some major die flow lines going on.

Also, the symbol after the 1988 is smooshed.

    Would like some insight. Thanks!

Looks like a coin struck by a die late in its life.

"the symbol"... are you referring to the mintmark?

    Bump.

I'm keeping it regardless of it's value, I just want to know if it's worth more than a nickel.

You could probably get 5 cents out of it.

in case you wanted another opinion ... This is just a late die state and is not collectible. It can be a cool example of what happens when dies start to wear out, but probably won't be worth more than a nickel in our lifetimes.

Not worth a monetary premium, but a good coin to keep as a teaching piece,

Well, according to specific metal prices, that puppy is worth at least 10 cents in nickel/copper metal content!
