To me it appears to be 187* .... Take a look at the examples below. At first I thought it looked like a 2 but on closer inspection I'm going with a 1. The 1872 is straight and the others are slightly curved. If you look really closely it appears there is a number close to the 7 just like the 1871. You see what I mean on the 1871?
After enlarging the obverse data area I think I am seeing a digit 1. A higher res pic, in focus, would help. In any event the overall condition would greatly lower the value.
Can't be an 1872, date logotype is the wrong style. It's wide and curved, the 1872 is compact and straight.
thanks for all of the comments. most of the posts on this coin are probably right. it is probably an 1871. i did not find the the coin metal detecting, i don't even go metal detecting. it is just another junk coin.
Take a closer look at the photo and then the photos I posted above. It is 100% an 1871 due to the fact that the date is curved and not straight. The 1872 is straight across and the 1871 is a curved date. This coin is curved and you can see that a partial number is very close to the upper part of the 7 just like the photo of the 1871. The only other possibility would be the 1870 and it is clearly not a 70.
