How AU coins can have better Eye appeal than MS coins

I buy the coin, not the grade. Grading is very subjective. I sent a beautiful 1955 DDO cent to NGC and it came back AU details, improperly cleaned. I pulled this coin from an original bank roll of 1955 DDO's so I know it was never cleaned. A local dealer suggested I bust out the coin, handle it without gloves to "dirty up" the coin and then leave it in a sunny window for a month on each side. I did this and the coin browned very nicely but looked far worse than when it was first graded. I resubmitted the coin and it came back MS64 BN. I now have an ugly brown 1955 DDO that's worth considerably more but the in my opinion, the "AU" coin looked much better.

you should have resubmitted it and I think if you have a roll of true 1955 ddo in ms you are very lucky indeed.

Are you trying to say that this was one coin pulled from an OBW, or claiming that the entire OBW was this variety?

CAC does not sticker based off eye appeal. You will find some zero eye appeal coins that have a CAC sticker, but they are accurately graded.

Absolutely. A "slider" Au coin can be beautiful, and look better than many MS coins. Here is an example (not my coin, as my 1894 is MS) of a gorgeous AU 58 Morgan:

Nice Morgan, Morgan! Your post brings up another good point. AU-58 graded coins usually look better than uncs because once an MS-60 coin gets a bit of wear, its surface imperfection and/or quality of strike many times knock it down to AU-50 status.

Okay, here is the prime comparison with that coin. The AU is NOT mine, but a really attractive coin that is for sale now. In addition, I am adding my picture of MY 1894, which is a MS 63. I don't see much difference in eye appeal, and my '94 is a "safe deposit box" warmer due to how much I paid for it years ago, as opposed to the AU example, which will go for a fraction of the MS version:

I think my AU58 Indian has more eye appeal than a lot of MS65's and MS66's I've seen
