    a 1946 s/d?
    b 1943 ( 4 )
The 1946 looks to have a shadow of a D, the 1943 looks to of lost the 4?

    1946: looks normal.
1943: lots of struck throughs that year, and a weakly-engraved date. Very common to find with missing digits.

I know a bit, but far from everything. There's always more we can learn.

The 1946 is the Sans Serif mintmark (MMS-007). The S/D variety for this date has the Trumpet Tail S mintmark (MMS-004).
