ok, crazy story, and I would not blame you if you don't believe me for lack of pictures. (you wouldn't be able to see the date its too faded) so here is the story. yesterday I went to a coin shop (Solano gold and silver) and they told me I could go and chose five coins out of their coin chest and take em for free. I chose 2 dateless B.F.s 1 1893 I.H.C. 1 L.N. and I 1960 franc. ok, crazy thing about the liberty nickel. 3 numbers of the date were showing, but very faded. they read 188 I tried to see what the last number was but couldn't, so I stuck it in vinegar. (it was a bad nickel, I could only see the outline of the face and the stars, the top of the reverse is faded into oblivion as well) well today I took a look, and after studying it for over 15 minuets, I saw it. the last number. it is a 5. I am extremely exited! this being the second rarest liberty nickel, and my second, I think its karma kicking in or something. but, I don't know the value, and im thinking on giving it back, now knowing its value. I need help on this. I don't blame you if you think im a troll. I hope to get pics of the coin up soon. very soon. -coingeek12
Well, the acid plus the low grade would bring about $120 IMO. I think the honest decision is to take it back to the store, but because for the heck of it, they are probabaly gonna let you have it.
like I said, you can only see the date by looking closely at it with a bright light, so I don't blame you for calling me a troll. she isn't the prettiest coin in the bin.
Awesome story. I have a similar story. Long story short, I picked a wheatie cent from a massive bucket at a flea market with a worn date. With a high powered magnifier, it turns out to be a 1914d! You should not feel obligated to return it as it is your but if you truly feel you should then do return it. Nice score!
id grade it fr02 not sure when they started using this grade but it fits the description perfect im not even sure what it means
It pays to be honest with your dealers. I feel like if you told them about your find, they would likely congratulate you and let you keep it. Trust goes a VERY long way in the hobby.
Pretty sure everybody here recognizes you as not-a-troll by now. That said, I can't make out anything at all on the photo. Can you try taking a picture with the light shining across the coin at a really low angle?
I had a similar experience too--- I Got a roll of wheaties and I found what I thought was a 1918, but because the D was too small, I didn't realize it was a 1918-D...
some nice pics of the coin. if you look close you can see the 188 and the curve of the five. man I hope it is a 5 and not a 3 or 6 or 7. I was skeptical at first, and now im a little more sure its a five though.....
