US Mint Platinum & Gold Uncirculated Coins Direct- Not as described!

Today I received my W mint marked 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz Platinum Unciculated coins from the mint with identical reverse design as the proofs. Paid $180 for the 1/10 oz and $380 for the 1/4 oz. Despite the description stating: "encapsulated in plastic, packaged in a protective presentation case, and is accompanied by a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity."

The coins do not come in a "protective presentation case." The coins were delivered in a thin box marked wih the decription, the CoA, encapsulated in plastic, but not a "protective presentation case." Instead they sent the coin in a velvet bag.

After calling and talking to customer service I was told that I received the coin as it is meant to be sent out and that the presentation case is only included in the proofs and that I was misreading the description...and sorry for the inconvience! This doesn't seem right. How can they state that these coins include a presentation case and instead include a velvet bag. There isn't anything presentable about a velvet bag. I enjoy the coins and am glad to have them, but I feel that the mint is doing a poor misleading job with their advertisment and followup customer service is poor. Any ideas? Any number that I can talk to someone in charge? The only number I have is 800-USA-MINT.

I am curious to see how the gold uncirculated coins are being delivered. Really glad I passed on those.

    Let me know your thoughts.

Yep!! Thats the way they come...mine as well. I sort of like the velvet bag...I plan to send it to PCGS anyhow...the velvet bag will now serve as a resting place for my pocket piece.

Glad I have the special plat coins..they are instant rarities..be happy you had the $$$ to get them and what they will be worth to the set!

    Hello ND86....

Thanks....I have been collecting the platinum all along. Just the 1/10 th oz and 1/4 oz in both proof and uncirc. The 2006 uncirc with the "W" mint mark and obverse of the proof 06 APE was a gift from the mint!
It, in my opinion will be the coin to have for the set as time goes by.
My primary focus in collecting is the entire American Eagle Series....long way to go but I have completed well over 1/2 of all the coins.

I am proud to say that I have all PCGS MS and PRF 69 with the one exception of a MS68 on the 1991 1/2 oz Uncirc AGE. In fact you will find a thread on CT where I had completed the 1/10 oz APE set both proof and uncirc. Platinum is a rare Earth metal and one that is difficult to mint as well. It's physcial properties are very hard. My only problem with the APE is that it is difficult to afford all the sets. I have been adding select proof coins in the 1/2 oz denomination...I think I have 3 or 4 of them.
Oh well..I am sure that when time comes for the 20th Anniversary for the APE it will be a special event as well. I was lucky enough to get the 3 piece gold AGE set this time around.
BTW..I did pick up all the fractional "W" AGE Uncircs as well!

Wishing all who read this the Best of the Holiday Season and a Great collecting New Year!!

Why do you care about the box? All of the AE unc coins are coming in pouches this year. They are less expensive than the proof which come in boxes. Annual uncirculated coins come in mylar and proof in plastic lens. What's the big deal? The pouch comes in a box. You want a clamshell box to display your AE unc coin in then buy one. They sell them separately. Bullion gold, silver and platinum coins come in plastic tubes except for the Buffalo bullion which comes in mylar. You paid more than a plastic tube and less than a clamshell box so you got a coin in an endcap in a velvet pouch. Still in the endcap, right? That's the protection.
    ***************************************************
The BIG DEAL is that it was not as described as including a presentation box. I paid a big premium over regular Uncirculated platinum and bought something as not described. Protection is not the issue. If I wanted a claim shell for a coin in a plastic holder I would have bought an airtite and the claimshell. I guess you didn't catch the point that the description is misleading.....

It sounds like the U.S. Mint is guilty of false advertising.I believe that they have a case to answer,as they can be done under the relevant federal &/or state legislation. The U.S. Mint is a government agency, but they should be under the same law as everyone else.

Does anyone else agree with me on this?

    Aidan.

Yes, I agree, but the mint is no longer a service arm of the government, they are simply out to make a profit, in any way that they can.
Their customer service stinks, the quality is often below that of the 19th century.
Designs are crummy, and they don't even give credit to the designers of the states quarters, instead they let the engravers put their initials on the coins.
And, obviously, they have never read the laws about misleading advertising.
Perhaps they should start a TV show as another arm of the HSN?

In fariness, the description seems pretty clear and a bag is not a flip box.

    presentation box?.

there is no presentation box at all. that's why you can not see the box picture or sample anywhere they advertised. mint is a big liar.

The mint did not lie. This is the description for the quarter oz from the Mint website

Each 2006 American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated One-Quarter Ounce Coin contains 99.95 percent pure platinum, is encapsulated in plastic, inserted into a pouch, placed in a protective outer box, and accompanied with a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity.

This is for the site for the 1/10 oz

Each 2006 American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated One-Tenth Ounce Coin contains 99.95 percent pure platinum, is encapsulated in plastic, inserted into a pouch, placed in a protective outer box, and accompanied with a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity.

Both state that the coin comes in a pouch.

What do you know. THEY CHANGED THE DESCRIPTION!!! Didn't even make mention of the error. I copied and pasted the description including the "presentation box." Now is says pouch. False advertising has changed to bait and swith. True liars. What a bunch of losers

This I understand completely. He still feels victemized by the incorrect information.

Now with this I agree with you.

Now this is all besides the point. Its childish, IMO, to berate the mint in such a broad brush just because of this issue.

People said the same thing about the mint when they started selling the Unc singles of the 2006-W gold and silver eagle claiming that they had said that they would be issued in the sets only and that they went back and changed the text on the web site when they started selling singles. But when we found a hardcopy ad fromback when they first started selling the sets it had the exact same text that the "changed" press release on the website had. They had misread the press release, reading things into it that it didn't say.

Find a hardcopy ad that backs your claim, otherwise I have to consider that possibility that you misread the description. So far all I have is your claim that you didn't get what was promised, and a description that makes no such promise.

Buy the coin not the pouch/box.

    ND86:
The only coins I collect by date are gold and platinum 1/10 eagles. I have all the uncirculated 1/10 platinum eagles and gold 1/10 in proof and uncirculated. The proofs as you likely already know come in small presentation boxes that look like small books.

Not knowing in advance about gold reverse proofs I looked at upcoming products and read about the platinum eagles. Since I already own gold 1/10 oz bullion along with the proof series I decided to pass on the gold uncirulated since I would be doubling up on basically something I already own.

Now I think the gold uncirculated in the presentation boxes look really nice especially all lined up and decided that I would begin collecting the platinum 1/10 oz uncirculated begining with 2006 assuming they came in a presenation box as stated.

After waiting for the uncirculated eagles to go on sale and waiting to receive them I was highly let down that they do not come in the presentation book-like cases despite the description. After calling the Mint and being told that the description doesn't mention anything about presentation boxes despite the fact that I was reading verbatium the description in front of me I was put off.

Now a few days after calling the Mint they changed the description as it was that way along. I feel that they should have made a note stating for what ever reason the coins would no longer be sent in presentation boxes, but rather the velvet pouch. This should have been done before they started shipping rather than after me calling. Now I am not saying they changed it because of me, but eitherway they should make a note of the error or change in old description along with the changed description describing velvet pouches. This is why I am upset. Granted Bait and switch was a little strong, but I was appaled to read the changed description with any notation of the change as if this was the way it always read.

The coins are low mintage and I haven't decided if I will keep them or sell on Ebay since now people want something no longer available, but I will likely not buy any in the future. Just stick to bullion 1/10.....plus its a lot cheaper.

With that said, do you think upcoming uncirculated bullion platinum eagles as issued since 1997 lacking the W mint mark will be harder to come by in following years since now the mint has a similar program despite the reverse design? I am curious about how much "collector" demand makes up the bullion production.
    **************************************************

Let me make certain I understand your point. You bought a couple of APE unc fractionals that are completely sold out and potentially very valuable due to low mintage and you were originally upset because the mint said they came in a protective presentation case and they came in a pouch inside a regular box instead. The language used by the mint to describe the packaging was inaccurate and misleading. You used much stronger language but I think it's the same problem we're talking about, no?

So, now you're saying the mint changed the description to be accurate and not misleading and you're still mad? That's where I lose you. You seem to be saying that the mint is "a bunch of losers" because they apparantly fixed the "false advertising" problem with correct information and now they're "bait and switch" people and "true liars"?

I know you had a problem with them, and righty so, but why have a problem with them because the seemed to have fixed the first problem. Bait and switch seems to me more correct if you got an inferior product. I've seen the APE unc and they are truly beautiful coins. You got a fabulous product. You can always return the coin for a full refund....and there'd be a thousand collectors out there drooling to buy those valuable, sold out APE fractionals knowing they come in a pouch and not a case.

Please correct me if I didn't get your point or missed something. I've been wrong before on this one.....

with the low mintages, anyone with the available capital should IMMEDIATELY buy all available on the secondary market.
