This coin appears to be made of iron - it is strongly magnetic. About 23mm-24mm & 4.0g. I did find an auction for an iron Korean coin on ebay - I know my coin is different - but I thought some here might appreciate the price of it http://www.ebay.com/itm/RRRR-Korea-Sang-Pyong-Tong-Bo-1mon-iron-coin-/270841393444 Any ideas on my coin? Thanks
I found a listing for a Chinese issue in Iron, no picts. T’ai-p’ing rebellion period, 1851-61, emergency Iron coin, Chihli mint, C5-4a
Thanks for the reply Windchild I wasn't able to find that coin yet but the search led me to some references to Japanese 1 Mon coins being made of iron and they seem to use nearly or the same characters my coin has. http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces20859.html
The head of the Tsu character appears at first glance to be closed, but the rest of the coin doesn't fit with the closed Tsu varieties. Would you mind getting another photo with the lighting coming from a different direction?
Thanks very much for the help Yes it is just one coin - I think the casting process caused the reverse to expand a little beyond the obverse. Ardatirion - thanks very much for the attribution. Here are some more pics from other angles...
