So, I've got a 1890 Morgan Silver Dollar minted in Philadelphia. It was in a great case since at least 1961 and I'm considering having it graded as it looks pretty darn good. To me, an amateur! No scratches, color is very bright and silver, just not sure if it's worth grading but what if it's the rare coin worth several thousand $$?. Here are a few pics: Thanks for any and all advice!
Sorry, your Morgan looks like it was polished and cleaned before it was put into the case. I can see wear on Liberty's hair, so the 'luster' should be impaired as of being an AU coin, bit the ''luster' is booming. That tells me that this 'luster' was created by polishing this coin up to resemble an MS coin. It's worth melt, around $20. .can you post a pic of the case?
I agree with Rickipedia. That coin has been heavily polished. 1890 is a common date, so it's worth melt.
That's a bummer! The coin was in a hard lucite plastic (it was like plastic was melted around it) since at least 1961 (it was given to Stockholders of some bank back then) which I had removed using liquid nitrogen and brute force.
At first glance I thought it was fake and I'm not the type to say that all the time. OP, check this out for a reference to compare what graded specimens look like. http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Morgan/Grades
I'd use it as a pocket piece for a few months, then I can send you some bottom ash from our boilers at work (high in sulfur). It should tone really nice.
It appears fake from the photographs--probably the light. At any rate, it has definitely been cleaned, and is worth melt.
