I have been on a mission to do a proof set of Trade dollars for many years, but I only have four so far. This is my favorite, a soft golden toned 1881.

So what is your opinion, are chop marks damage or part of the history of the coin?

"So what is your opinion, are chop marks damage or part of the history of the coin?"

In my opinion, it is pretty clear that they are both. However, the TPGs are willing to certify as problem-free those Trade dollars with chop marks whereas they will not do so for many other types of post-mint damage. I expect they certify these as problem-free since they were meant for use in an area known for placing chops on coins and, thus, they could have been expected to receive the treatment. By the way, the 1875-CC with 30+ chops on it is in a problem-free PCGS F15 holder. Below is another Trade dollar without chop marks-

I have to agree that they should be considered problem free, but it should be called out somehow with the grade. Yours for example could be graded as F-15CM.

Thats pretty much how I grade them that coin has obviously seen much circulation in the orient as was its intention the proofs were not intended for this I think it's a personal call as to grade I'd call it f 15 chopmarks if I was buying or selling it I personally don't collect trades with chopmarks as to me they detract from the visual appeal but it is part of the history of the trade dollar I have a friend that collects them only with chops the more the better he finds them fascinating so its a personal call
