Last night, my mom was showing me proof sets that she bought for my birth year and the year I graduated and sets for my sister's birth and graduation year. She also showed me some other coins she has. I was shocked to find a 1964 half dollar. She said she found it underneath the built in drawers in the house we used to live in. Apparently, the builders of the house put it under the drawers when the house was finished in 1964. It's not in great condition or anything, but it's a real 90% Kennedy dollar. I'll inherit it one day, hopefully many years in the future. I love JFK halves, and I love silver coins, so naturally I really like this coin. I would have taken pictures of it but I didn't have my camera with me.
Very cool and there is actually a very interesting story to go along with it. It is a long standing tradition dating back to the time of the Romans to place a gold or at the very least silver coin of the current year under the main mast of a newly built ship to bring good luck on its voyages. Following a version of that tradition, some construction workers will do the same with buildings.
I need to do some foundation work on my other house as it was built in 1898 and then added to in like the 1950's.the one I currently am at was built in 1996,so three possibles.
Interesting story. The 1964 half has a very interesting story in itself that harks back to a different time in America.
I grew up in the house (it was green and white, had dark blue, light blue, and green shag carpeting in one bedroom and no central air) so it does have special meaning. The fact that it's a '64 makes it even cooler. I'm gonna hold on to this one. I just wish I had known it was down there when we first moved in so I could have put it into the coin box and it would be in much better shape now.
