I have been looking online and reading about coins that are sent in and graded that come back as AU or EF but gen cleaned or cleaned. What sort of value percent is taken away on average. From myself posting coins I get it seems that seem to be cleaned, how do certified graded cleans come into play. Also, I know its what I like as a collector but I sometimes see AU coins that are valued at $100-200 selling under $100. Womdering if they are worth getting if its part of a set im completing.
Depends on the harshness of the cleaning, and sometimes how old the coins are, as old coins (such as Capped Bust half dollars) are generally more acceptable despite being cleaned, as cleaning coin was a common practice back then. The general numbers I keep seeing are that coins, depending on the factors, can be worth snywhere between 20-80% of their original value.
Yeah I figured with older coins and/or older cleaning, you still see the numbers expected. Other than the desire to just being able to own some coins. Is that worth buying a cleaned AU/EF coin vs a lower grade coin.
That depends on what you can live with. I, personally, would take a lower graded coin over an mint state/details coin.
Depends very much on the severity and type of cleaning for me, so any I consider have to be available in hand to decide, not photographic.
I have never bought a coin that was slabbed "cleaned". I have bought raw coins that I had graded, and came back with the cleaned description. Most of those I have sold to dealers at shows. I figure if it's just another 30% or so to buy it problem free, I'll wait and save up the difference. Never rush yourself into a purchase.
As said it really depends what coins we are talking about, if its an early 1800s coin or a very rare coin jump on it then on the other hand if its like a mercury dime buffalo nickel or walker i would pass just depends on the coin really !!
To many i think it has a lot to the coin, as mentioned. Also, buying a coin in hand can make the diffrence. I do not mind buying certain coins, whether being cleaned or not. I enjoy viewing coins that have a lot of details. Some people in this world have never seen the details that are on some modern coins, let alone early coinage.
For me a coin that I could never afford if problem-free, I would consider buying if cleaned. But, the price must be right and the eye appeal must be good. I would rather have a lightly cleaned XF 1893s Morgan, than a problem-free fine. It would match the rest of my set better.
